Bago is an ancient city , 50 miles northeast of Yangon, the capital of Myanmar .
It is two hour drive away from Yangon, by car or train. It is on the main old road from Yangon to Mandalay.
It was a seaport visited by Telegu people from India and Arab travellers about AD 800 . Portugese merchants arrived Bago in 1519 , followed by other Europeans.
It was a flourishing seaport during 12 to 18 centuries under the reign of Mon Kings of Hanthawaddy dynasty, Razadric and Queen Shin Saw Pu as well as Myanmar Kings of Taungoo dynasty, King Tabin Shwe Hti and King Bayint Naung.
Many ancient pagodas are there good to be visited.
